Overview

Treasure is a mobile app that highlights users’ favorite local and undiscovered small businesses that are also known as gems on our platform. Our app allows users to promote their favorite small businesses to their friends and cultivate a community that supports small businesses, whether it’s local or international.

We were given a week to design and prototype for the event. It was then scored by professional designers and product managers. At the finale, we presented our final prototype live in front of a different panel of judges from Instagram and Adobe.

Challenge

Big businesses have unlimited marketing resources, whereas small businesses and freelancers have to keep hustling to continue revenue flow. Instead of promoting ourselves, how might we design a solution to empower the community to highlight small businesses and/or creators through a platform of discovery?

Design an accessible third-party app for Android mobile devices that highlight people’s favorite local and undiscovered small businesses within a week for the Adobe Creative Jam x Instagram.

    Our Focus
    My partner and I agreed to focus on creating a simple platform with a fun and welcoming user interface with visuals and microinterations. Adobe XD's smart animation and timing function helped us achieve the animations we wanted in the prototype.

    Solution

    Our app curates users’ personal interests to make it easier to discover businesses. Small undiscovered businesses are often referred to hidden gems and hence the name of our app Treasure.

    Treasure aims to connect local businesses and their customers. Here are the following features of our app to support this initiative:

    Customize feed upon signing up to see small business recommendations nearby.

    See what your friends and favorite local businesses are up to. Interact by liking and commenting. Feature hidden gems by sharing and reposting them onto you and your friends’ feed.

    One coherent timeline for users to easily find the latest news of a store. Posts of their items and services are listed in a separate tab to keep everything more organized.

    We roughly sketched out ideas for the main screens.

    We wanted to make Green Cycle to be as simple as possible while letting it still be visually stimulating & fun for user’s to use and interact with.

    We picked out colors and font styles that correlated to our crystal/treasure themed app whilst considering the visibility and accessibility to various audiences.

    Conclusion

    What we learned and next steps
    • The importance of creating a strong theme and brand beforehand in order to make the designs cohesive.
    • Constant communication and voicing out our thoughts while designing is essential to working remotely as a team so that we are all on the same page.
    Although we got feedback for Treasure from the judges of the Adobe Jam x Instagram finale, we did not have the time to do user testing of our prototype. The next steps for Treasure would be to obtain more input with a series of user testing for small business owners and customers to see the feasibility of our features and how successful it is.

      If the specific item you are inquiring about has a listing for sale online, a pop-up with ask if you want to be directed to the page after your conversation with the shop owner.
